Parliament's special session to commence today: Know what's on agenda

The special session of Parliament, which will last five days, is scheduled to begin today, September 18. The 'Samvidhan Sabha' will open the session. The Central Government has made the decision to begin the special session with a debate on the 75-year history of Parliament, beginning with the inaugural meeting on December 9, 1946.

The administration has also made public its initial schedule of events, which indicates that the Center will host an all-party meeting on Monday evening, shortly before the special session starts. The agenda for the coming week will probably be discussed during the meeting.

On September 19, in honor of Ganesh Chaturthi, the official move from the old to the new Parliament building will take place during the special session. September 22 marks the end of the Special Session. 

What's on the special session's agenda?

In addition to discussing about the 75-year history of Parliament, the legislative agenda for the current session includes four laws, one of which governs the appointment, terms of service, and tenure of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.

The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023 and The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023, which were earlier approved by the Rajya Sabha on August 3, are also included in the list of bills. Whereas the Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023 replaces the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867, the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023 reforms the Advocates Act, 1961.

Additionally, "The Post Office Bill, 2023" has been added to the list of agenda items for the Lok Sabha. The Indian Post Office Act of 1898 is repealed by the bill, which was first introduced in the Rajya Sabha on August 10, 2023.

The INDIA Bloc has agreed to take part in the special session of the Parliament with a total of 24 parties. Sonia Gandhi wrote to Prime Minister Modi to request discussion and debate on a number of topics, including the nation's current financial predicament.

During the special session, she pushed for discussion on a number of topics, including the necessity of the caste census, Manipur, intercommunal violence, and inflation. In addition, Sonia Gandhi pushed for a dialogue on the divide between a number of states and the Centre.
