Krishna tribunal award: Karnataka to file appeal in Supreme Court

The Karnataka government has finally decided to file an appeal in the Supreme Court seeking clarification on the Krishna Water Tribunal Award.

Chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, who is leading an all-party delegation to New Delhi after holding discussions with senior advocate and legal luminary, Fali S Nariman, has decided to file an appeal on Monday before the Supreme Court.

Addressing presspersons  in Delhi, Yeddyurappa said: “The tribunal has permitted the state government to raise Almatti Dam’s height to 524.26 metres, and it has dismissed apprehensions raised by Andhara Pradesh.”

Yeddyurappa pointed out  that under the ‘A’ and ‘B’ scheme, the tribunal has allotted 911 tmc of water for Karnataka and it has also permitted to store 303 tmc in the Almatti Dam. “But, our demands are not fully met.”  he said.

“That’s why we have decided to take this decision in the interest of the state,” added the chief minister.

Yeddyurappa  pointed out, “ Under the ‘B’ scheme, we sought 278 tmc water, but the tribunal has awarded 177 tmc. If we got what we had demanded, we can bring more areas under irrigation.”

“As announced by the state government, we will take up all irrigation projects under the Krishna river basin,” he said.
