Continuing its crackdown against autorickshaws plying illegally in the western suburbs without mandatory permits, the Borivali Regional Transport Office (RTO) has filed six FIRs in the last three days.

"The FIRs are against errant drivers, who were found to be driving autorickshaws that have completed their mandated 16 years and have been scrapped by the transport department. Most scrapped autos ply illegally without license and we have been cracking a whip against such autos," said Ravi Gaikwad, head of Borivali RTO, adding that the drive will continue as it causes fear in the minds of such errant auto drivers.

As per Gaikwad, three FIRs were registered on July 22 at Kurar police station in Malad while two FIRs were registered on July 21 — one at Samta Nagar police station, Kandivali while the other at MHB police station, Borivali. The latest FIR was filed at the Dahisar police station. The autos will be crushed once the RTO officials finish all the formalities required from the Court.

"Autos plying illegally are a huge menace as they overcharge, refuse to take passengers, and are even known to flout all traffic rules," said Gaikwad. He said in the past six days a total of 15 FIRs have been filed against such autos.

Meanwhile, auto unions have been demanding strict action against illegal autos and earlier, the Mumbai Rickshawmen's Union, led by Thampi Kurien, has been demanding that rickshaws be fitted with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags so that only authorised rickshaws get CNG from fuel pumps.
