The decision of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) corporator Kishore Shinde to stand against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator Baburao Chandere for the chairmanship of the standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has created a buzz in the political circles of Pune.

More so, because the party had abstained from voting in the mayoral elections earlier this month. Party insiders said that the decision of the party to contest has more to do with projecting the image of an opposition party to reckon with.

“The NCP-Congress combine has nine members in the 16-member standing committee, as against five and three members of the saffron alliance and the MNS, respectively. The decision of the party to fight is an image-building exercise. By deciding to fight against the NCP candidate, we are going to project that we are a party to reckon with,” a senior leader said.
