IIT Roorkee, ABB India start smart microgrid project for better power management

Global electrical equipment and automation major ABB has teamed up with the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee to kickstart a project to make it a smart campus. The project is part of a larger collaboration between the two institutions that will include a Smart Grid Resource Centre that will aim to quicken the integration of various power sources with specific application for the Smart Cities Mission.

The groundbreaking ceremony for a microgrid was held on Friday at the campus of IIT-R, which is Asia's oldest technical institute, a whole 100 years older than the republic. The collaboration and the smart campus are meant to serve as a pilot project as well as platform for research and development of smart grid technologies that would then be integrated into the Smart Cities Mission.

The project is to be partially funded by ABB India under its CSR initiatives. The smart campus development, in addition to the microgrid, would include technology solutions like smart metering, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), ring main units (RMUs) and a backbone of wireless broadband communication platform, a statement from the company said.

It would also aim to create an operational smart grid network integrating all sources of energy including diesel generation and renewable energy, while preparing for the future of grid management technology, the statement added.

"With respect to IIT-Roorkee, they have been chosen as one of the platforms by the Government of India, we understand, for the Smart Cities Power Distribution initiative. So, they are going to be the cradle for the testing and trying out of different configurations and the technologies which will be, or should be, implemented in the Smart Cities initiative. By that means, yes, we are the technology provider. We will support them with cutting edge technologies which they will deploy on their own campus to make it a green campus, and also students and scholars will have the chance to do their research on top of it," said Sanjeev Sharma, Managing Director of ABB India.

The smart microgrid on the IIT-R campus would serve to test and roll out technologies and methods for the effective integration of renewable sources of energy into larger power grids, said Pitamber Shivnani, President, Power Grids, ABB India. "This microgrid, along with the smart grid model, that will be set up on campus, will demonstrate the future of power," he added. 

"… the smart electricity distribution network and management system that we are undertaking will enable us to create a 100 percent green campus and achieve zero carbon dioxide emissions in the long run," said IIT-R Director Prof Ajit Chaturvedi.

IIT-R already has installed solar systems installed at 27 locations across the campus, which can together generate 1.8 MW of electricity.
