March 23 is marked as Shaheed Diwas. It was an important day in Indian history. On this day, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were sentenced to death in the Lahore conspiracy case and were hanged around 7:30 PM on 1931. Their execution proved a pivotal moment in India’s battle for freedom.

What set Bhagat Singh apart from many of his peers was his clarity of thought, his steadfast beliefs and his ideas about freedom.

1 "I am a man and all that affects mankind concerns me"

2) “The aim of life is no more to control the mind, but to develop it harmoniously; not to achieve salvation here after, but to make the best use of it here below; and not to realise truth, beauty and good only in contemplation, but also in the actual experience of daily life; social progress depends not upon the ennoblement of the few but on the enrichment of democracy; universal brotherhood can be achieved only when there is an equality of opportunity - of opportunity in the social, political and individual life.”

3)  "Every tiny molecule of Ash is in motion with my heat I am such a Lunatic that I am free even in Jail. Lovers, Lunatics and poets are made of same stuff.”

 4) If the deaf are to hear, the sound has to be very loud. When we dropped the bomb, it was not our intention to kill anybody. We have bombed the British Government. The British must quit India and make her free."

4) "One should not interpret the word “Revolution” in its literal sense. Various meanings and significances are attributed to this word, according to the interests of those who use or misuse it. For the established agencies of exploitation, it conjures up a feeling of blood stained horror. To the revolutionaries it is a sacred phrase."

5) "Non-violence is backed by the theory of soul-force in which suffering is courted in the hope of ultimately winning over the opponent. But what happens when such an attempt fail to achieve the object? It is here that soul-force has to be combined with physical force so as not to remain at the mercy of tyrannical and ruthless enemy."

6) “By crushing individuals, they cannot kill ideas."

7) "The sanctity of law can be maintained only so long as it is the expression of the will of the people.”

 8) "Life is lived on its own…other’s shoulders are used only at the time of funeral."

9) “This is not the time to marry. My country is calling me. I have taken a vow to serve the country with my heart and soul.”

10) “The bomb was necessary to awaken England from her dreams. We dropped the bomb on the floor of the assembly chamber to register our protest on behalf of those who had no other means left to give expression to their heart-rending agony. Our sole purpose was to make the deaf hear and give the heedless a timely warning.”
