Incessant rains have led to floods in seven districts of south Gujarat and Saurashtra, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said on Monday, even as more than 250 train passengers were rescued after the railway track was flooded, and hundreds others were shifted to safer places.

Heavens opened up in Gir Somnath district of Saurashtra from Monday morning. Gir Gadhada taluka of the district received close to 15-inch rainfall between 8 am and 6 pm, while Una taluka received over 11 inch, said the Met department. Widespread rainfall was also recorded in several other districts. However, rain had lost some of its intensity in the second half of the day.

Reviewing the situation arising because of heavy rains, CM Rupani said that the downpours had led to floods in Valsad, Navsari, Dangs and Surat in south Gujarat, and Junagadh, Amreli and Gir Somnath in Saurashtra.

"Looking at the situation, we have deployed 15 teams of National Disaster Response Force [NDRF] in the state. Five more teams of NDRF are arriving so that additional personnel can be rushed as need arises," Rupani told reporters.

Officials said that 252 passengers were rescued by NDRF as the train they were travelling in was stuck on flooded tracks in Gir Somnath.
