The ban on Chinese lanterns by the high court (HC) and the raids city's police department has reduced the number of fire incidents in the city during Uttarayan as compare to previous year.

In the year 2017, the city police commissioner had issued an order banning the Chinese Tukkal and Chinese threads during Uttarayan. This is the third year after the ban was issued and the city has witnessed tremendous drop in the fire incidents which occured due to Chinese Tukkal's year after year.

In 2017, only four minor incidents were registered in the city, following in 2018, the cases reduced to three incidents, with no casualty reported. In the present year, the number is reduced to one, which happened due to Chinese Tukkal.

The incident took place in a thread factory located in Hirawadi area of Bapunagar on Monday evening at around 7.30pm. In the incident, no two fire vehicles were rushed to the spot and situation was taken under control. No casualty has been reported.

As per fire department, eight fire alarms were raised this Makar Sankranti, out of which only one incident was due to Chinese Tukkals and other seven were routine fire incidents which occured due to short circuits, gas leakage and from unknown sources.

As per fire control room staff, "Before the ban was implemented, fire department had even registered 35 fire incident which happened due toChinese Tukkal in the city, but it has been on reducing after the ban was implemented"

M.F Dastoor, chief fire officer in Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency service (AFES) said, "Apart from the decrease in Chinese Tukkal cases, there also been much awareness among the people in the society regarding the disadvantages of the product and how harmful it is."
