Over 100 policemen swooped down on the slums of Versova in Andheri after launching 'Operation Tatya' to nab a dreaded fugitive Ashraf Gulam Rasool Patel alias Tatya Patel who had been on the run for the past one year. This is the second case of Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) being registered against Patel. Over 200 cases of heinous nature have been lodged against Tatya and his family members.

According to LCB, over 100 policemen have been on the lookout for Patel for the past ten months, after he was booked by Kashimira police under stringent sections of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). In June 2017, Patel poured kerosene on Najma Patel, 42, and set her ablaze in an attempt to kill her over a property dispute. Tatya was booked under MCOCA in 2005 and 2017.

Patel's son, Hashir Patel, is absconding for the past two years over charges of two MCOCA cases registered against him by the Thane Rural Police. Cases of kidnapping, extortion, land grabbing, murder and attempt to murder have been registered against the infamous Patel family from Mira Road.

Pramod Badakh, Assistant Police Inspector and in-charge of the Kashimira Local Crime Branch Unit said, "Since the Thane court declared him as an absconding accused in the MCOCA case, Tatya Patel was on the run and was hiding in a shanty in Versova."

"We activated all our informers and asked them to track down Tatya. After locating him, our team of over 100 policemen in plain clothes laid the trap. We had to be very cautious keeping in mind that he was suspected to be armed," said Badakh.

We have arrested Patel under MCOCA and he will be produced in Thane court, added Badakh.
