The Delhi Police has a dedicated senior citizen cell to cater to the needs of the elderly living in the National Capital, however with the murder of the senior citizen couple the functioning of cell has come under the scanner.

An elderly couple South-East Delhi's Amar Colony were killed and their body was found in decomposed state after a week at their home.

As per Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) the police should pay a visit to the residence of the senior citizens twice a week. However the police officers had not visited the residence of Virender and Sarla Khaneja after January 15. It was only when their relative called the police and informed them that the phone calls went unanswered is when their semi-decomposed bodies were discovered.

So far the Delhi Police have 35,626 senior citizens registered with them. A checklist for the security audit of senior citizens includes a check on the domestic helps, tenants if any, driver, washerman, sweeper, iron man, car cleaner and other people. Not just that if they have been verified by the police and an identification proof as well. In this particular case the police has so far not revealed if they had verified the domestic help or had a copy of their identity proof. Besides this, the police has to also check the access and security features at the house. For example if the door has a chain or an eye hole or an electronic lock, burglar alarm etc..

The Delhi Police had also also launched a mobile application for senior citizens in October 2016. So far only 13448 senior citiznes have downloaded the application.

The senior citizen security cell was set up in June 2004 at the Delhi Police headquarters. Apart from this the Senior citizen security cell have also been created in all the fourteen districts of the Delhi.
