Ahmedabad restaurants log off from Swiggy

If Zomato and Uber Eats do not renegotiate the terms of the contract and reduce their commission, they will also face a boycott from January 14

Nearly 750 restaurants and eateries' operators in Ahmedabad have decided to boycott the online food delivery platform, Swiggy, from Thursday night, industry representatives informed the media. If Zomato and Uber Eats do not renegotiate the terms of the contract and reduce their commission, they will also face a boycott from January 14.

A meeting of restaurants and eateries was held in the city in which it was unanimously decided to log off from Swiggy.

Earlier, restaurants and eateries under the aegis of Hotel and Restaurants Association – Gujarat (HRA) had got consent letter from most of the restaurants to negotiate on their behalf with online platforms following which a meeting was held with representatives of online food delivery platforms.

"Swiggy was the most adamant. Others were accommodative and said that they would consider our demands. So we have decided to boycott Swiggy in the first phase," said Rohit Khanna, committee member of HRA.

Soon, eateries of Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot will join them.

Khanna said that they are getting the support of Federation of Hotels and Restaurant Owners of India and state Energy Minister Saurabh Patel in the fight.

Narendra Somani, president of HRA, said if other platforms do not come out with a win-win formula, they will also face a boycott from January 14.

"Till a few years from now, there were long queues at hotels, restaurants and eateries for buying Undhiyu. However, with online food delivery platforms coming in, people are getting them delivered at home," said Somani.

Khanna said they have demanded reduction of the commission of platforms to up to five per cent.

“Their high commission is not sustainable for us. They are burning cash to provide incentives to our customers so now we get our own customers routed through them,” aid Rohit Khanna, committee member of HRA.
