The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has followed in the footsteps of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in announcing its budget for the year 2019-2020.

The Rs 3,861.88-crore budget focuses on completing projects initiated last year and announced no new mega project, nor a tax hike or tax break in the next fiscal.

"There is no increase in taxes for the year 2019-2020. Our focus is more on the collection of dues from revenue sources," said Sanjeev Jaiswal, TMC chief, while presenting the budget on Wednesday.

"We are concentrating on completing various projects that were initiated in the last two years and that is why have called our budget Sankalp-purti budget," he said. Sankalp means 'intention' or 'determination', and purti stands for 'completion'.

The budget speaks more about the achievements of the TMC under the leadership of Jaiswal in the last four years. An output report was brought out to highlight various projects undertaken by the TMC. Jaiswal has completed his three-year tenure and has got an extension till 2020 to head the TMC.

It has more provisions for social, educational, environmental, women and child development schemes this year, Jaiswal said. Apart from the five lakh trees planted in last three years, TMC aims to plant another 2 lakh in 2019-2020.

It wants to promote bag-free schooling and create 400 more digital classrooms. Last year, TMC schools got 600 digital classrooms.

The civic body will give Rs 50,000 to those couples who adopt a girl child. It will also give Rs 20,000 to families with two daughters. Widows and divorcees, and women above 60 will get an annual allowance of Rs 18,000.

The children of road workers will get Rs 18,000 study allowance every year. Those preparing for competitive exams will get Rs 20,000 a year.
