Chennai Metro users on Tuesday morning were in for a shock when the metro train they were travelling in stopped midway in a tunnel in the underground phase. The train was headed for Thirumangalam station when it halted for about 30 minutes starting 8:05 am.

According to a passenger who was on board, this was the first time he was experiencing this, given that he took the train everyday to work. The passengers had to wait in the train for 30 minutes and the Emergency lights were blinking.

“After 30 minutes, the doors opened and we passengers had to walk via a  walkway in the tunnel to the nearest Thirumangalam station. Metro staff and police were there to guide us” a passenger told Zee Media.

Given that the train remained dead on the tracks for 30 minutes, it is likely that the services across that route in the city were disrupted. Chennai Metro Rail has been contacted for more details and their response is awaited.

The story will be updated once they respond.
