Mumbai: Shops get the stick after viral carrot clip

The department issued notices to around 15 shops and fined them for not maintaining cleanliness.

The Market department of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiated action against shops at Krantisingh Nana Patil Municipal Market after a video of a man cleaning carrots with his feet went viral on Monday.

The department issued notices to around 15 shops and fined them for not maintaining cleanliness.

In the video, the man was spotted climbing a drum filled with water and carrot, and cleaning the vegetable with his feet. Soon after BMC received a complaint regarding the same on Twitter, the officials jumped into action. "Officials from the G North ward, BMC'sHealth department and Market department along with FDA official paid a visit to the market and initiated action," said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant commissioner of G North ward.

A total of 19 big drums and one small one was confiscated from them."On Tuesday, we issued notices to four shops and collected Rs 1000 fine from each shop for not maintaining cleanliness," said an official from the BMC's Market department. Seven more shops were slapped with a fine and nine shops got notices on Wednesday.
