Kane Williamson has been appointed as the captain of the New Zealand cricket team for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. The announcement of the 15-member squad was made on Monday morning, following New Zealand's defeat to England in the second ODI of the four-match series. Despite suffering a ruptured ACL during the IPL 2023, Williamson is making a remarkable recovery after undergoing surgery on his right knee.

Both Williamson and Tim Southee will be participating in their fourth ODI World Cup, bringing their experience and leadership to the 15-member group. On the other hand, six players in the squad will be making their debut in this prestigious tournament. Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, and Will Young have all been included in the ODI World Cup squad for the first time.

It is worth noting that Finn Allen, an opening batter, and Henry Nicholls, a top-order batter, have missed out on being selected for the Kiwi squad. New Zealand's head coach, Gary Stead, acknowledged the difficulty of making these tough decisions while finalizing the team.

“It’s always a special time to name a tournament team and I’d like to congratulate the 15 players selected today. It’s a great honour to represent your country at a World Cup," Stead said.

"From Kane and Tim heading to their fourth tournament to the guys selected for the first time, it’s always a very exciting time. As with any squad named for an ICC tournament, there have been some tough calls and there will be some disappointed players," he added.

New Zealand finished as the runners-up in the 2019 edition, falling agonizingly short in a heart-stopping match against England. Now, the Kiwis are set to begin their 2023 campaign with a rematch against the reigning champions, England. This highly anticipated tournament will commence on October 5, with the opening game taking place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
