A recent incident of spat between Janzeb Khan and Tariq Parveen has been closely watched by the police and all quarters related to dealings in the underworld. For, it signals one of the two things — either Dawood Ibrahim has lost grip over his gang members or the decades-long truce between him and late don Abdul Karim Sher Khan
Pathan, alias Karim Lala, has been called off.

Janzeb is the grandson-in-law late Lala, while Tariq is a close aide of Dawood. Both Lala and Dawood had fought pitched battles over the control of the underworld fiefdom, until they settled down and made peace.

The war between the two erupted in 1981 when the Pathan gang lead by Lala bumped off Dawood’s elder brother Shabir at a petrol pump. During the successive revenge killings, the warring factions lost more than 12 of their key members, including close relatives. Lala lost his nephew Samad Khan and younger brother Rahim Khan during the seven years of retaliatory gang war.

Senior community leaders known to both the factions intervened and suggested a compromise formula to avoid anymore bloodshed. In September 1987, a prominent community scholar Syed Kumel Ashraf, popularly known as ‘Pir Saheb’, prevailed upon both the gang leaders and asked them to end the standoff. A meeting between the two dons was fixed at Mecca.

Pir Saheb, Karim Lala, Rehman and two other close relatives attended the meeting with Dawood, who reached Mecca from Dubai. Pir Saheb became a witness to the truce. Both the dons agreed to bury the hatchet forever and decided to work together as one group.

The truce has held good for over two decades and both Dawood and Lala clans attended each others family functions, including marriages and birthday parties in Dubai and London.
