The city started the week on a sizzling note, with the maximum temperature on Monday touching 40.3 degrees Celsius, enveloping the city in a heat wave.

Expect little better from Tuesday, which weathermen predict will record 38 to 39 degrees, before getting to Wednesday, when the temperature should slip to 34-35 degrees.

Monday's was the biggest surge the mercury has seen so far this year, as it breached the 40-mark to be seven degrees above normal. The normal is calculated as the average of the highest temperatures for the day over the last 30 years.

It was the fifth time since 2009, and second year in a row, that the mercury topped 40 degrees Celsius on March 25.

"The spike in heat is due to the strong northeasterly winds from the land s region. The delayed setting in of sea breeze adds to it," said Rajesh Kapadia, a private weather forecaster. He pointed out how it was a "very dry heat" that caught citizens unawares on Monday, which is quite unusual for humid Mumbai.

"Mumbai is known for high humidity levels but on Monday the humidity was not very high," he said.

Narendra Shah a Bandra resident said, "I was out for some work around 12 pm and felt intense heat and was feeling as I was standing in a furnace so much so that my eyes were burning."

Nitesh Sawant a Borivali resident said that by evening he was completely dehydrated. "I had to meet several clients for work and was continuously traveling on my two wheeler since 11 am and by the time I reached home at 7pm I was totally tired and having severe headache, dehydration and even had to go to a doctor," he said.

As per weather blogging site Vagaries of Weather run by group of weather forecasting enthusiasts several areas adjoining Mumbai like Thane (43.4 degree Celsius), Karjat (44.9degree Celsius) Palghar (40.9 degree Celsius) Khopoli (44.5 degree Celsius) too saw sharp rise in maximum temperatures.
