Adilabad district collector Divya Devarajan in Telangana on Monday appealed to people who come to her to extend new year greetings to bring blankets instead of bouquets so that they could be distributed to the needy suffering from the cold wave conditions.

She said the administration was doing its best by setting up night shelters in the district headquarters and providing blankets to students of welfare hostels for relief from the cold wave.

"Many people come to greet me on new year day (January 1). This time, it's so cold that instead of bouquets, I want people to bring a shawl, a rug or a sweater which I can give to the homeless and those in hostels. This is my request," she told reporters.

According to state government agencies, a minimum temperature of 2.7 degrees Celsius was recorded in Arli village in the district and five degree Celsius in Adilabad.
