A youth on Thursday hurled a slipper at Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) president Nitish Kumar at an event organised by the party's youth wing in state capital Patna. The youth later said that he took to the action as a mode of protest against "unemployment due to the present reservation system in the country".

The incident took place at 'Virat Chhatra Samagam' organised by the students' wing of the party at Bapu Sabhagar auditorium on the occasion of Lok Nayak Jay Prakash Narayan Jayanti.

While the slipper did not reach Nitish, who was seated on the dais with senior party leaders including state JD(U) chief Bashishtha Narayan Singh and poll analyst-turned-politician Prashant Kishor, the Chief Minister's security personnel moved swiftly to cover him. The slipper landed among the gathering seated in front of the stage. After this workers of the JD(U) youth wing and Nitish's supporters caught hold of the accused and rained slaps, punches and kicks on him before the Patna Police arrested him.

While being whisked away by the police personnel, the accused identified himself as Chandan Kumar, a native of Aurangabad district, before the media. On being asked why he threw a slipper at the CM, Chandan said, "I am protesting against the discriminatory reservation policies. The benefit of the quota system does reach its true beneficiaries… Those who are well-off still enjoy its perks while those who really need it have been left to fend for themselves. The youth are not getting jobs, thus increasing the rate of unemployment."

In the last few days, several Union Ministers and ruling party leaders were shown black flags in different parts of Bihar during anti-reservation demonstrations.

Unfazed by the incident, the Bihar CM stayed at the event and later, while addressing the gathering said, "Today being the Lok Nayak's Jayanti, it is a very auspicious day to organise a students' conference. The youth is the future of politics and the country, and all must follow the ideals set by JP (Narayan) if they want to do anything in life." Kumar also narrated several anecdotes from his days as a student politician.

Thursday was not the first time a slipper was thrown at Nitish. Earlier in January 2016, a man had hurled a slipper at him during a public meeting to protest then-proposed liquor ban in the state.
