In a new twist to the student unrest following police excesses in Kolkata's Jadavpur University, a message on the website of the university showed vice chancellor Abhijit Chatterjee apologising. This lead to uproar on social media, with many believing the vice chancellor was probably trying to mend fences with the students after being put under extreme pressure for calling the police on campus, who indulged in strong arm techniques.
However, in a dramatic twist, the vice chancellor's office denied that he had apologised on the website. According to the university's registrar, Pradip Ghosh, the website has been hacked and they are looking to rectify it. Taking a strict stand in the issue, the registrar has told media outlets that they will lodge a formal complaint so that those who are responsible for the hacking are booked under cyber laws.
Student organisations who are currently protesting against the authorities have denied any knowledge of being involved in this incident. This chapter will, in all likelihood, only add to the acrimony between the university authorities and student bodies which have currently paralysed the campus. Students meanwhile are working full swing to ensure that the grand procession they plan to bring out on Saturday in the heart of Kolkata is a roaring success. So far they have received unequivocal support from teachers. It is yet to be seen if this hacking incident has any effect on their support base.
