The former Pakistan batsman was sentenced to 17 months in prison in February for his involvement in spot-fixing plans in Bangladesh Premier League T20 and Pakistan Super League. He was also banned from cricket for ten years by an anti-corruption tribunal and is due for release on October 21.
However, despite having a wife and daughter in Birmingham, he could face the prospect of deportation back to Pakistan.
Jamshed’s wife, Dr Samara Afzal, wrote on Twitter: “Today is the most difficult day of my life … I’ve felt the need to write this in the hope that others learn from Nasir’s mistakes.”
“Nasir could have had a bright future, had he worked hard and been committed to the sport than gave him so much, but he took a short cut and lost everything, his career, status, respect, and freedom,” Samara added.
“He would have got UK nationality and played county cricket, and he threw his chance away. He would do anything to turn the clock back and not lose everything. I hope all cricketers look at his example as a deterrent against corruption.”
Before the trial, Jamshed was in the UK on a spousal visa which was due for renewal in February 2019. But, with a court date impending, it was decided to put off a renewal decision until the case was decided.
“By far the most insidious consequence of these offences is the undermining of public confidence in the integrity of the sporting contest, not simply in the individual match directly affected but in the game of cricket generally,” Judge Richard Mansell QC said during their sentencing at Manchester Crown Court.
He has now received a notification to deport and has been told he would be further detained. He is appealing the decision and will apply for bail on October 21.
Jamshed is likely to learn of his immediate fate next week. It remains possible he could be deported immediately and expected to fight the decision from Pakistan.
