Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur stitched a 100-run partnership after which the tail wagged as India scored 466 runs in the second innings.
Team India have put the highest total of the series as they piled on 466 runs in the second innings owing to Rohit Sharma's first overseas century and half-centuries by Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur. After both Thakur and Pant fell in quick succession, pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav helped their side add 52 more runs for the last two wickets as England now have a mountain of 368 runs to climb if they have to win the fourth match of the series at Oval.
After Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara staged India's comeback on Day 3 with a 153-run stand, the visitors needed their middle-order to step up and help them get to a huge total on a pitch as flat as a pancake.
India didn't have a great first session losing three wickets including that of skipper Virat Kohli, who batted well till that point for his innings of 44. Ajinkya Rahane's poor form continued as he was dismissed for a duck and Ravindra Jadeja was too dismissed by Chris Woakes.
However, the visitors stormed back after an indifferent session after lunch as wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant, going through a rough patch came back into form and bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur continued his from the first innings. They both played out the first hour and after they had their eyes in, they both exploded hitting boundaries regularly and both brought up their half-centuries and completed a 100-run partnership.
Joe Root and Moeen Ali dismissed Thakur and Pant respectively in successive overs when the lead was 315 but then came the late surge as Umesh Yadav with an innings of 25 runs while Bumrah smashed 24 runs as India got a good lead of 367 runs.
However, a solid unbeaten opening stand between England openers Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns of 77 runs ensured we have a final-day thriller on our hands with all three results possible.
