Cricket and rain don't go hand-in-hand and the more of latter can ruin the former. But, rain-reduced games do provide entertainment as batsmen and bowlers have extra-aggressive mindset.
Something on these lines transpired on Saturday night in the Lanka Premier League (LPL).
Due to rain, the game between Colombo Kings and Galle Gladiators was reduced to a 5-over clash.
Batting first, Kings sent the marauder Andre Russell to open the innings. Russell came with a plan and as always, played in just one gear.
In the first over of the innings, Russell took Mohammad Amir to the cleaners as he smashed two sixes and three fours, accumulating 26. That over set the tone for the whole inninngs as Russell became unstoppable.
He kept smashing the ball towards and over the boundary as he reached his fifty in just 14 balls, joint-fifth fastest half-century in 20-over format. He finished with a 19-ball 65 as Kings made 96 runs in their allocated 5 overs.
Kings eventually won the game by 34 runs as Russell's assault proved too much for the Gladiators in the end and they could muster only 62 runs in their 5 overs.
Not just the Australians or the Kiwis, some of the the West Indian players are also finding their forms after having indifferent season of IPL.
Russell, who scored just 117 runs in 10 games of the IPL he played for Kolkata Knight Riders at an avergae of 13, came into LPL under pressure with an injury. But, on Saturday he looked nothing like that as he was back to his bludgeoning best.
For netizens, however, Russell's innings was a bitter-sweet one as many users suggested that they love seeing Russell when he is in this kind of mood, but they wished if this form was seen in the recently concluded IPL.
The users also felt sad for KKR fans and team management as they didn't reach the top four in this year's IPL and had Russell played like this in the IPL, KKR could ahve reached the playoffs.
While, many users were of view that when Russell hits like that , he still remains one of the world's biggest hitters of the game in this format
Here are some of the reactions:
65 off 19 balls for Andre Russell in the Lanka Premier League - Colombo Kings 96 for 1 in a rain-reduced five-over game. A quiet IPL, but Russell is still undoubtedly T20 cricket's most destructive hitter #LPL

What a knock from Andre Russell. Came to open the innings in a 5 over game and smashes 65 in just 19 balls with 6 sixes. What a brute this guy is, he doesn't let us miss Chris Gayle with his power striking. pic.twitter.com/Ro3KL3wPnn

Andre Russell simply destroyed the bowlers with a hammering 65* off 19 balls which includes 9 fours and 4 sixes. Colombo Kings make 96/1 in their allotted 5 overs.

Opening with Andre Russell is certainly a crazy left field move and him succeeding is even bigger. Lanka Premiere League is throwing some surprises to what is expected.
