Raghuanandan Srinivas Kamath, who has developed a brand worth Rs 300 crore via his tenacity and diligence, is one such example of an inspirational narrative. In Mumbai, Raghunandan Srinivas Kamath began the production of Natural Ice Cream in 1984. Kamath spent his entire life working to make natural ice cream accessible to everyone.

Early years of Raghunandan Kamath

Raghunandan Srinivas Kamath's father used to sell mangoes in a village in the Karnataka state's Mangalore area. From his father, Raghunandan learned how to choose the best fruits and preserve them. He learned how to choose and store fruits by spending a lot of time with his father. He then arrived in Mumbai with the intention of starting a business.

On February 14, 1984, Raghunandan introduced Naturals, his first ice cream business, and set up shop in Juhu, Mumbai. His business had just four employees and 10 ice cream varieties when it first opened.

Raghunandan Kamath’s unique idea to grow the business

When Raghunandan first opened his ice cream shop in Juhu, not many customers were visiting. Even though he was producing natural ice cream, there weren't many customers. Afterward, he had the smart idea to serve ice cream alongside a spicy pav bhaji.

People used to have sweet and cold ice cream after eating Pav Bhaji if they felt like something spicy. He was merely using fruit, milk, and sugar to make ice cream. Because of this, people's confidence in him began to grow over time. Raghunandan's ice cream shop began to see an increase in customers.

From his modest 200-square-foot shop in the Koliwada neighborhood of Juhu, Kamat generated Rs 5,00,000 in revenue in its first year of operation. After a year, he quit selling pav bhaji in order to develop a whole ice cream brand.

The six-table restaurant owned by Kamath currently serves five different flavors of frozen fruit ice cream. It had ice cream flavors with strawberry, mango, chocolate, cashew raisins, and custard apple flavors. More than 135 locations of Naturals Ice Cream exist now across the nation. These stores sell ice cream in 20 different flavors, including jackfruit, raw coconut, and more.

Media reports claim that Naturals Ice Cream's retail turnover is estimated to be around Rs 300 crore, in FY 2020. Since over 40 years ago, Kamath has kept his ice cream's distinctive feature—that no color or chemical is added—intact. All natural ingredients are used only in Kamath's ice cream.
