Mukesh Chhabra reveals Sushant Singh Rajput rejected many films for Paani, says his dedication was misunderstood

Casting director Mukesh Chhabra revealed that late actor Sushant Singh Rajput rejected many films for Shekhar Kapur's now-shelved film Paani. He also added that his dedication to the project was misunderstood as arrogance.

Late Sushant Singh Rajput was known as a method actor, going all-out for his characters. For MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Sushant underwent rigours sports training, and even spent hours with cricketer Dhoni. Similarly, Sushant was really excited about leading Shekhar Kapur's now-shelved film Paani. For this film, Sushant refused multiple projects, as he wanted to dedicate himself to Shekhar's film. This professionalism of the actor was misunderstood as arrogance by a few. 

Recently, casting director Mukesh Chhabra, who directed Sushant's last film Dil Bechara, opened up about the same and revealed how excited he was for Paani. During a recent conversation, Mukesh said, "He said no to so many films just because of Paani. Logo ko laga ki woh star ban gaya hai toh issi liye he was acting arrogant, but he was genuinely happy and excited about the film. Everyone wants to work with Shekhar Kapur. I was there when he was confirmed for the film. Jaise bacche ko khilona mil jaata hai aur woh khush ho jaata hai, waise hi he was very happy after the news. Unfortunately, the film didn't happen."

Shekhar Kapur, who was going to direct Sushant Singh Rajput in the movie Paani, has unveiled the script of the movie. The movie was shelved after Yash Raj Films (YRF) backed out of the project. Shekhar had hoped that Paani would get completed one day. "If you want to journey with the Gods or your creativity, you have to walk each step in devotion, in humility. God willing, Paani will get made one day. If it does, I will dedicate it to Sushant. But it has to be made with partners that walk in humility, not in arrogance," read his tweet. After Sushant's demise on June 14, 2020, Shekhar Kapur shared a tweet in which he stated that he knew the actor had been depressed for six months and hoped he could do something about it.
