The city police on Thursday claimed a major breakthrough with the arrest of a 10-man gang of alleged interstate criminals, wanted in as many as 90 cases in Bangalore alone, and 144 others registered across the country.

Besides the 10 of the so-called Irani gang, six others who had allegedly received the booty from the gang were also arrested.
Police said the gang members impersonated police officers and conned middle-aged and elderly women into parting with their jewellery. Valuables worth Rs35 lakh were recovered from the gang.

Deputy commissioner of police (south) Sonia Narang said the accused persons, posing as policemen, took jewellery from unsuspecting women, saying it was unsafe to exhibit the valuables since robbers were on the prowl in the neighbourhood.
They even produced fake police identity cards to win the women’s confidence, police said.

Once the women handed over the jewellery, the miscreants packed and returned the valuabes and jewellery to the victims, who would realise that they had been given imitation gold.
The gang was also active in Hassan, Shimoga, Hubli, Belgaum, Tumkur and Mysore.

The city police assigned assistant commissioner (Jayanagar) Ramesh Chandra to look into this case. An investigation team was formed to bust the criminal gang.

A team led by JP Nagar inspector SK Umesh arrested the 10-man gang based on information that they were spotted behind Lakhmi Temple on Kiran Circle in Puttenahalli. On interrogation, the gangsters revealed that they had sold the stolen valuables to Ranka Silver Refinery in Nagarathpet and Harninath Jewellers at Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh.

The police named the arrested 10 as: Jaffar Hussain Irani, 32, and Mohammed Hussain Irani, 21, both residents of Pune, Abujar Irani, 22, and Bakar alias Bakar Hussain, 42, both from Dharwad, Abbas Irani, 22, of Mumbai, KS Jabiulla, 24, Sajjad Ali, 24 , and Noushad, 36 all three from Hindupur, Azam Ali Irani, 49, of Kalyan in Maharashtra and Aslam, 34, of Gadag.

The accused persons were relatives, police said.
