Mumbai on high alert after firing at Jama Masjid

The Mumbai Police have sounded a high alert, following the firing incident near Jama Masjid in Delhi on Sunday afternoon.
Moments after the firing, a television channel received an email claiming responsibility. The sender said he was from the Indian Mujahideen. He blamed ATS chief Rakesh Maria for arresting two innocent people in connection with the German Bakery blast in Pune. The letter ended with a threat that the group would attack Mumbai if Maria did not do the necessary amendments.

The police are worried because the festival season will continue for a few more days. The major task before the Mumbai police is to ensure that the festival season gets over peacefully, an officer said.

“After the Delhi incident, we have asked all police stations to be careful,” commissioner Sanjeev Dayal said. “There will be more patrolling and nakabandis at important places, hotels and lodges. We will carry out checks around Ganesh pandals across the city. On Sunday there was a large gathering at the Bandra fair, and for the next three days hundreds of people are expected at the Lalbaugcha Raja pandal. We will do our best to ensure the safety of citizens.”

A few days ago there were reports that two terrorists had entered the city. “One is a Pakistani and the other is a Bangladeshi,” Dayal said. “The one from Bangladesh is a member of the HuJI. Though they are different groups, we cannot rule out the possibility of the groups merging or working together in future. Everything will be clear only after their arrest.”

The commissioner has asked Mumbaikars not to panic. “We have taken all precautionary measures,” he said. “Do not panic. If you notice anything suspicious, please notify the nearest police station or control room and the police will take necessary action.”
