Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar announced five names in the first list of his party candidates for the upcoming assembly elections scheduled in October-November. The list pitches Leader of Opposition in Upper House and NCP MLC Dhananjay Munde against his sister and BJP minister Pankaja Munde in Parli constituency, Sandeep Kshirsagar against his uncle – Shiv Sena minister and ex-NCP MLA Jaydutt Kshirsagar in Beed, among others.

Pawar, who is on a state tour, was in Beed on Wednesday where he had a meeting with senior party leaders and decided to announce the five NCP candidates' name. Vijay Singh Pandit from Gevrahi, Prakash Salunkhe from Mazalgaon and Namita Mundada from Kej will be on the ballot. Dhananjay Munde had lost the election to his sister in 2014.

The Shiv Sena and the BJP had poached the 29 NCP and Congress leaders including sitting MLAs. "The majority of heavyweight political families have left the NCP and joined either BJP or Shiv Sena. Hence, Pawar is on pre-election tour to identify potential candidates and reconnect with voters. The leaders may have left the party but people are with us. We have decided to give an opportunity to young blood that has power to defeat these defunct political families," said Dhananjay Munde, who is also with Pawar during his campaign.

POLL AGREEMENT

The Congress and the NCP have decided to contest 125 seats each while the rest 38 will be contested by smaller allies for the total 288 seats in state assembly

Sources in NCP said Pawar surprisingly announced these names because he wants to give them time to prepare. "Pawar wants to strengthen the hand of young candidates. In the coming days, we will see more shocking names," said senior NCP leader requested anonymity.

Pawar told his party workers they should stop thinking about those who left the party. "These defectors are history now. We have to find out young and eligible candidates who were denied the opportunity for several years," said Pawar.
