Three different women have been divorced by their husbands in the police station, on the street and over the phone respectively
Three separate cases of women being given triple talaq have been observed between Wednesday and Thursday from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.
In a flurry of triple talaq incidents observed from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh between Wednesday and Thursday, three different women have been divorced by their husbands in the police station, on the street and over the phone respectively.
The first incident came to light when victim Chand Bi lodged a complaint against her husband, Rashid for domestic violence. “My husband, Rashid used to brutally beat me with belts and iron wires. However, he did not stop at that. When I got pregnant, he got me to do an abortion,” said the victim. Reportedly, Rashid divorced the victim in the police station itself by uttering the word ‘talaq’ three times. Chand Bi had been married to Rashid for two years.
In the second incident, victim Akseer was divorced by her husband Mustazaab on August 4. Akseer had married Mustazaab five years ago. “When my son was ten years old, he had brutally beaten me and threw me and my son out of the house,” said Akseer. Following which, the victim had registered a complaint of dowry harassment against her husband in the nearest police station. “When I was returning home from the market on August 04 with my two-and-a-half-year-old son, the husband had stopped me and tried to snatch my child away from me,” said Akseer. “After I had refrained him from snatching my son, he uttered the word talaq three times and divorced me,” added Akseer.
In the third incident, the victim, Gulista was married to Laik for eleven years and had three children. Reportedly, Gulista had been driven out of the house after been given triple talaq by her husband. “I had approached the nearest police station but the police took no action. “Therefore, I went to the office of Bareilly’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Muniraj. They listened to my ordeal and referred the case to a counselling centre,” said Gulista. The police had called the husband and the wife to the counselling centre on Wednesday. The victim reached the centre but the husband did not turn up.
