Santiniketan, the home of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in West Bengal, has been included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. It is a cultural site in West Bengal’s Birbhum district and known for its historical and cultural importance. It was originally an ashram built by Rabindranath Tagore’s father, Debendranath Tagore.

Santiniketan is the famed place where poet Rabindranath Tagore built Visva-Bharati over a century ago. India had been striving for a long to get a UNESCO tag for this cultural site located in the Birbhum district. A few months ago, the landmark site was recommended for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List by international advisory body ICOMOS.

Santiniketan was established in 1901 by poet and philosopher Tagore. It was a residential school and centre for art based on ancient Indian traditions. A ‘world university’ was established at Santiniketan in 1921, recognising the unity of humanity or “Visva Bharati”.
