The Karanj police, on Thursday, arrested two cheats from the
Natraj hotel, for duping people by selling fake cell phones against cash or the customers' own cell phones.
The police had received a tip-off regarding two strangers staying in the hotel, whose activities appeared suspicious. Acting on the information, the police raided their room and arrested the two. The two cheats were identified as Imran Jhat and Wasim Malik.
During interrogation, it was revealed that they are from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.
According to the police, the two had left Ghaziabad carrying 45 cell phones, of which 21 have been seized by the police. The rest, the cheats sold on the way here.
"The two used to show people a fresh piece of the N95 cell phone model, and said that they wanted to sell it really cheap, either against cash, or by exchanging with the customer's own cellphone. However, only this one piece that they showed was real - the rest were all dummies, which they gave to the people they duped", said KS Savani, police inspector with the Karanj police station. He added that even before the customer could have a proper look at the phone, the two would disappear.
Savani has urged people to not believe those selling such devices on the streets. "This can lead to very serious consequences and may even land you in jail, in case you have exchanged your cell phone with a cheat, and he misuses the phone for anti social activities", said Savani.
