Meet Balamurali Ambati, world’s youngest doctor, started doing calculus at 4, wrote book at 11, know all about him

However, some people have accomplished this remarkable feat at an early age, turning themselves into the youngest doctors in medical history. 

Balamurali Ambati is an Indian-American ophthalmologist. He was born on July 29, 1977, in Vellore, and on May 19, 1995, he entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s youngest doctor, at the age of 17 years, 294 days. 

He completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from Gandhi Medical College in Hyderabad, India and completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Utah. 

Ambati was born into a Telugu family. His family moved to Buffalo, New York when he was three. According to his parents, he started doing calculus at the age of 4. He co-authored a research book on HIV/AIDS titled AIDS: The True Story – A Comprehensive Guide at the age of 11. He graduated from NYU at 13 and from Mount Sinai School of Medicine with distinction at the age of 17, scoring 99% on his National Medical Boards and became the world’s youngest doctor in 1995. 

He completed an ophthalmology residency at Harvard University where he developed strategies to reverse corneal angiogenesis. He received the prestigious Raja-Lakshmi Award in 1995 from Sri Raja-Lakshmi Foundation. In 2008, he earned a PhD in Cell Biology. From 2008 to 2016, Ambati worked at the Moran Eye Center and served as a professor of ophthalmology.
