Pakistan fast bowler Wahab Riaz made a significant announcement on Wednesday, August 16, as he declared his retirement from international cricket. Wahab, who last represented Pakistan in December 2020, has now taken up the role of caretaker Sports Minister for Punjab Province in Pakistan.
Despite stepping away from international duties, the 38-year-old will continue to showcase his skills in franchise cricket around the world. Throughout his illustrious career, Wahab featured in 27 Test matches, 91 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 36 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), amassing an impressive total of 237 wickets across all formats.
Expressing his decision on Twitter, Wahab bid farewell to international cricket and expressed his gratitude to all those who have supported him throughout his journey.
"I have been speaking about my retirement plans past two years, that 2023 is my target to retire from International cricket, and I feel comfortable now more than ever that I have served my country and National team to the best I could have," Wahab Riaz said in a statement.
"It has been an honor and a privilege to represent Pakistan on the international stage. As I bid farewell to this chapter, I am thrilled to embark on a new adventure in franchise cricket, where I hope to entertain and inspire audiences while competing against some of the best talents in the world," he added.
Wahab Riaz has an impressive record in international cricket, having claimed 83 Test wickets, 120 ODI scalps, and 34 T20I wickets for Pakistan. He is renowned for delivering his best performances on the grandest stages, such as his remarkable five-wicket haul against India in the 2011 World Cup semi-final and his fiery spell against Australia in the 2015 World Cup quarter-final.
Notably, Wahab was a vital member of the Pakistan side that emerged victorious in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure and contribute to his team's success.
Furthermore, Wahab has left an indelible mark on the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he stands as the leading wicket-taker with an impressive tally of 113 wickets. Remarkably, he is the sole bowler to surpass the coveted 100-wicket milestone in the history of the tournament.
