Over the years, Indian cinema has seen a number of superstars from the days of Ashok Kumar and Dilip Kumar to the international stardom of Rajinikanth and now Shah Rukh Khan. The biggest boasting power for all these stars has been their box office draw. But it is surprising that the most successful actor in the history of Indian cinema is not one of the usual suspects.
India’s highest grossing actor
Akshay Kumar’s films have earned more than any other Indian actor at the box office, as per industry insiders and researchers. The actor has managed to pip the three Khans and south superstars like Rajinikanth, Prabhas, and Kamal Haasan by virtue of being prolific over the last 15 years. As per Bolly Movie Reviews, Akshay’s films have netted Rs 4834 crore in India by 2023. This gives his films a domestic gross of around Rs 6000 crore. While his films have not done wonders but have still managed a combined gross of $250 million over 126 films, giving the star a worldwide gross of around Rs 8000 crore.
How Akshay beat the Khans and Rajini
One might wonder how Akshay Kumar is leading the list considering none of his films have ever crossed Rs 400 crore, something the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Rajinikanth, and Prabhas have done multiple times. The key to that is Akshay’s penchant for doing multiple films per year. The box office numbers for Indian films began booming some 15 years ago when the 100-crore club was established. Since then, Akshay has done 52 films where he has been in a lead role. In comparison, in the same time period, Shah Rukh has done 15 films, Salman 25 films, Aamir only nine films. Rajinikanth, who used to be prolific in the 80s and 90s is much more selective now. Since 2008, he has played lead in just 10 films. So, by virtue of doing 3-5 times as many films as other stars, Akshay has managed to mint money at the box office. In this time period, he has been in hits like 2.0, Sooryavanshi, Mission Mangal, Airlift, and many more. Additionally, the 2000-07 time period was also successful for Akshay with several comedy hits.
Other highest grossing actors from India
Akshay’s stay at the top may be short lived given that Shah Rukh Khan is breathing down at his neck. The actor’s 65 films have earned over Rs 7000 crore at the box office. Given that he has Jawan and Dunki ready for release in the next four months, he has a chance to overtake Akshay. Salman Khan is in third spot with his films making just under Rs 7000 crore, followed by Aamir Khan, who finds himself in the list courtesy of mega blockbusters like Dangal, PK, and Secret Superstar. Other actors whose films have grossed over Rs 5000 crore are Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Rajinikanth, and Kamal Haasan. Prabhas, Hrithik Roshan, and Thalapathy Vijay are in the next bracket with box office earnings of over Rs 4000 crore each.
