It's Shashi Kapoor's birthday today, here are 5 lesser known facts about him...
Son of the legendary Prithviraj Kapoor, it's the 8th birth anniversary of the veteran actor Shashi Kapoor. Born in 1938 in Kolkata, the actor has given a number of memorable performances in films like Deewar, Kaala Patthar, Namak Halaal among others. He acted in more than 160 movies and was also the recipient of the National Award three times.
While fans remember his popular films, dialogues and songs etc, here are 5 lesser known facts about the actor:
1) Shashi Kapoor was a minor when he got married to Jennifer Kendal, who was 5 years elder to him in age
Shashi Kapoor tied the knot to Jennifer Kendal at the age of 20 years. He was the first Bollywood actor to have married a foreigner. They never worked in movies together. Jennifer was 5 years elder to him. Shashi used to practise for theatre at Mumbai's Prithvi Theatre and Jennifer was an artist and was a part of her father's troupe.
2) How Geeta Bali, Shashi's sister-in-law got him married to Jennifer
As their love story goes, it was while Jennifer was playing the part of Miranda in Shakespeare's popular play titled The Tempest, that love blossomed between her and Shashi. In 1957 Shashi went to Singapore along with Jennifer's theatre group and performed the play with her. The duo came closer during this time. While they were in Ooty for a play, Shashi's sister-in-law Geeta Bali put a dupatta on Jennfer's head and in 1958 they got married.
3) Jennifer died of cancer
Jennifer was elder to Shashi and she used to care a lot about him. She loved him a lot but apparently, she hid a secret from Shashi. Actually she was suffering from Cancer and she didn't reveal this fact to Shashi. She kept on working for his theatre without telling him post which she died of cancer on September 7, 1984
4) Why Shashi Kapoor never got married again?
Shashi Kapoor had lost his heart to Jennifer the moment he set his eyes on her. After Jennifer's sad demise, he could never give that place to anyone else in his life. He spent the rest of his life with his fond memories of the time spent with her. They have three children, Kunal Kapoor, Karan Kapoor and Sanjana Kapoor.
5) Jennifer left acting after getting married
Jennifer was supposed to be a fantastic actress but she left acting after getting married to Shashi Kapoor. She did so because she wanted to make her family her first priority. She brought up her three kids Kunal, Karan and Sanjana and imparted the family values to them.
Shashi Kapoor left for heavenly abode on December 4, 2017 after prolonged illness. The actor was reportedly suffering from Alzheimer's in his last days.
