The ex-US president, Donald Trump, was formally detained on Thursday night to face racketeering and conspiracy charges for his role in the 2020 election loss in Georgia. As he fights for a second term in office in the impending 2024 presidential election, this case is the fourth wave of criminal allegations brought against him this year.

Donald Trump has now been released on bond after completing the booking process at the Fulton County jail in Atlanta, as per jail records, CNN reported.

The former president was detained on suspicion of racketeering and conspiracy, then freed after posting a $200,000 bond. After being freed, Trump returned to his residence in New Jersey.

With his surrender in Georgia, Trump has now turned himself into state or federal authorities four times this year after being charged with a crime.

Trump came to Atlanta's Fulton County Jail to be booked and freed on bond after being charged with conspiring with 18 other defendants to try to tamper with the Georgia election results.

Trump is the first US president to ever be charged with a crime. He was charged with 13 charges in the Georgia case for allegedly trying to tamper with the outcome of the election, which Joe Biden won.

He was detained on six conspiracy counts related to alleged attempts to conduct forgery, impersonate a public official, and submit false statements and papers, as well as allegations of violating Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organisations (RICO) Act.

Rudy Giuliani, Trump's former personal lawyer, was one of the 18 co-defendants who were also charged. The accusations against Giuliani derive from alleged attempts to sway local legislators over the outcome of the election. Indicted individuals also include Mark Meadows, who worked as Trump's chief of staff in the White House.
