Jaahnavi Kandula death: Seattle cop's joke after Indian student's demise sparks outrage

An India student in Seattle lost her life after being hit by a police patrolling vehicle and now an unsettling video of a US cop laughing and joking about the deceased has enraged the world prompting the launch of an investigation against the Police Union Leader.

Jaahnavi Kandula, a student from Telangana was killed by a police cruiser in Seattle. Now, a video has gone viral on social media, in which a Seattle police union leader is recorded laughing and joking on a phone call about the demise of a young Indian woman. 

The cop is even heard saying the words, "She had limited value". This sparked a plethora of enraged reactions from people all over the world. Jaahnavi was pursuing her master's from Northeastern University's Seattle campus. 

An investigation has also been launched against Seattle police. The video was released on Monday of Officer Daniel Auderer whose colleague Officer Kevin Dave was involved in the accident. 

The Seattle Community Police Commission (CPC) issued a statement Monday following the release of the video, calling the conversation between Auderer and his colleague, "heartbreaking and shockingly insensitive."

"The people of Seattle deserve better from a police department that is charged with fostering trust with the community and ensuring public safety," the CPC added.

After this unsettling and inconsiderate video was released on YouTube by the Seattle police department, people from all over the world started posting angry messages on social media. Here are some of tweets posted by people. 

 

The Consulate General of India commenting on the issues wrote on 'X' that, “Recent reports including in media of the handling of Ms Jaahnavi Kandula's death in a road accident in Seattle in January are deeply troubling. We have taken up the matter strongly with local authorities in Seattle and Washington State as well as senior officials in Washington DC for a thorough investigation and action against those involved in this tragic case."

It added, “The Consulate and Embassy will continue to closely follow up on this matter with all concerned authorities”.

Kandula was hit by a police patrol vehicle in South Lake Union and succumbed to her injuries in January 2023. After an initial investigation, it was found that the police were travelling at an alarming speed of 75 mph (119 kmph) in a 25 mph (40 kmph) zone while she was using a crosswalk.
