If you’ve ever watched the Jack Black rock classic School of Rock, there is a 10-year-old character named Zach Mooneyman, who plays the guitar like a dream. If you haven’t seen the movie, watch the end of this sequence and appreciate the talent of this guy.

Closer to home, we have Tamish Pulappadi, a 14-year-old guitarist from Bengaluru, who was inducted into the Brotherhood of the Guitar, a global initiative started by rock band photographer Robert Knight to help identify young talent. “Robert (sir) had seen a Facebook video of mine where I played a Steve Vai cover. He commented on it and then shared the video with Vai, who then responded,” said Tamish while speaking to DNA.

Tamish began playing the guitar when he was 10 years old. His father, a fan of Guns ‘N’ Roses, thought he could influence his son. “I idolise Slash (the lead guitarist for the band and the Velvet Revolver). I was heartbroken when I couldn’t attend his concert when he came to India two years ago. There was an age limit and unfortunately, I was 11 at the time,” adds Tamish.

Tamish’s Facebook page has several covers. These are mainly by rock legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Slash, Metallica’s Kirk Hammet, and Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris. “I lean towards rock guitarists, but that doesn’t mean I’m not a fan of Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and Jimmy Page,” he says, adding that while he has played some of their tracks, he hasn’t recorded anything by them.

Tamish also has some originals, which we managed to hear and which blew us away. But if you thought his guitar-playing skills weren’t enough, Tamish also makes time for classwork and other activities. “He’s a class topper,” says Gautam Mahajan, a friend and fellow-musician, who discovered Tamish’s talent on Facebook. “If that’s not enough, Tamish also takes part in online racing tournaments,” he adds.

For his 14 years, Tamish is humble with what he has. “I’ve been lucky to have this talent and I hope to become a world-renowned musician one day.”

With this talent, we won’t be surprised if he actually enters the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
