Family members of those killed in encounters in Uttar Pradesh appealed to the Centre on Sunday to help against harassment at the hands of local police.

Family members of the deceased alleged that the local police has been harassing them since the Supreme Court said last week that the recent encounter killings in UP require "serious consideration" and agreed to examine the details in this regard, setting the date of further hearing on the matter on February 12.

The apex court has issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on a PIL seeking a court-monitored CBI or SIT probe into the encounter killings in the state.

In a press conference organised by the National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (NCHRO), the deceased's kin claimed that they are now being picked up by local cops and are being harassed and threatened to maintain silence over the issue. Ansar Indori of NCHRO, said that local police are threatening these families with fake encounters.

Seventeen-year-old Naushad's mother, Shaheen, and 22-year-old Mustakeem's mother, Raffeeq, claimed that the police picked these two from their house in Atrauli and killed them. Shaheen also said that the two were innocent and didn't have any criminal record, contrary to what the police have claimed. They also said that their houses are being raided and all the documents and money have been taken away by police.

Contrary to their claims, the state government has said that the encounters took place in accordance with rules. The Uttar Pradesh government attributed the deaths of "criminals" to the police acting in self-defence after being attacked with firearms or lethal weapons and sought to deny insinuations that minority community members were being targeted.
