PM Modi's cabinet makeover: New ministers take oath, portfolios to be assigned soon

A total of 15 ministers were inducted into the Union Cabinet while 28 took oath as ministers of state (MoS).

The much-hyped cabinet reshuffle of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government took place on Wednesday. As many as 43 ministers, including new and old, took oath at the Rashtrapati Bhavan that was administered by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind. 

Among the bigwigs included in the new cabinet is Jyotiraditya Scindia, who ditched Congress last year and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was later elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh. Former Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal and former Maharashtra CM Narayan Rane have also been given ministerial berths. On the other hand, Hardeep Singh Puri, Kiren Rijiju and Mansukh Mandaviya also took oath as ministers.

Kiren Rijiju, BJP MP from Arunachal West, was also elevated as a Union Cabinet Minister. Anurag Singh Thakur, BJP MP from Hamirpur, was also elevated in the reshuffle and expansion of the council of ministers.

While seven new inductees were already a part of the government, 36 new ministers were sworn in. A total of 15 ministers were inducted into the Union Cabinet while 28 took oath as ministers of state (MoS). All eyes are now on the portfolios that will be assigned to these ministers.

In the cabinet makeover, the new Council of Ministers has been shaped in terms of experience and qualification. The new Council of Ministers includes four former Chief Ministers, 18 former state ministers, 39 former MLAs and 23 MPs who have been elected for three or more terms.

Prior to the reshuffle, several ministers, including IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank, DV Sadananda Gowda, Thaawarchand Gehlot, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Babul Supriyo, Dhotre Sanjay Shamrao, Rattan Lal Kataria, Pratap Chandra Sarangi, and Debasree Chaudhuri had tendered their resignations, which were accepted by the President of India.
