Jadavpur University, one of the leading education institutes in India, has landed in the middle of a controversy as the death of a minor student inside the hostel campus has sparked a nationwide debate on ragging and sexual assault in colleges.
A minor Bengali student fell to his death from the hostel of the Jadavpur University after a bout of intense ragging. What was disturbing is that his body was found stripped naked when it was discovered, raising grave questions of sexual assault on campus.
According to the police investigations in the Jadavpur University death case, the minor boy was a fresher in college and was being ragged by a group of 12-13 boys from their senior years. Till now, six accused in the case have been arrested, and all of them were on the same floor when the boy fell to his death.
Around 10:30 pm on August 10, the victim was called to the hostel floor by his seniors and was allegedly forced to write a letter accusing another student of ragging him, potentially implicating an innocent non-hostel student.
Soon after forcefully signing the letter, the minor boy was taken to another hostel floor and made to give an “intro” to his seniors in three separate rooms, just like his other classmates. It is alleged that during this, he was once again intensely ragged.
The prime accused allegedly forced the boy to strip naked and harassed him. The victim also tried to contact his family to communicate his mental distress, but his phone was snatched away from him by another student.
Soon, the boy allegedly fled from the room in a state of panic and mental distress and reached the edge of the balcony, where the other boys followed him. In a hassle, the boy reportedly fell from the building and died upon impact with the ground.
The exact details of the ragging incidents and the minor student’s death are still being explored, with the management of Jadavpur University under strict scrutiny.
