Every year on October 2, people around the world celebrate Gandhi Jayanti to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, one of the most well-known figures in the Indian freedom struggle. Rabindranath Tagore, a Nobel laureate, bestowed the term "Mahatma" on Mr. Gandhi, a politician, social activist, and lawyer whose beliefs and battles helped India gain independence in 1947.

He was adored as "Bapu" and referred to as the "Father of the Nation." He received praise from all around the world for his persistent commitment to "Swaraj" (self-governance) and "Ahimsa" (non-violence).

Why is Mahatma Gandhi's face printed on Indian currency?
A country's currencies are a representation of its sovereignty and frequently honour the figures who have made significant contributions to its history. Gandhi was chosen due to his widespread appeal, and the RBI introduced the new "Mahatma Gandhi Series" in 1996 to replace the previous Ashoka Pillar bank notes.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released a commemorative note of Rs 100 in 1969 that featured Mahatma Gandhi sitting in front of the Sevagram Ashram. But when a series of Rs 500 currency notes featuring a beaming Gandhi was introduced in October 1987, Bapu's image began to feature regularly on currency notes. Since that time, Gandhi's portrait has frequently appeared on notes of various denominations.

Gandhi's image that appears on banknotes is not a caricature. He is pictured alongside British statesman Lord Frederick William Pethick-Lawrence in this cutout of a 1946 photograph. The picture was chosen because Gandhi's smile was captured in the most appropriate way; the portrait is a mirror image of the cut-out.

The RBI announced the 'Mahatma Gandhi New Series' of banknotes in 2016. Along with new security features, the back of the notes now also include the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan logo in addition to the ongoing Gandhi picture.
