However, politicos in Kashmir continue to be under house arrest

Ahead of Block Development Council (BDCs) elections, the Jammu and Kashmir administration on Wednesday released all political leaders in Jammu, who were put under house arrest days before Centre abrogated Article 370. However, politicos in Kashmir continue to be under house arrest.
Prominent National Conference leaders— Devender Singh Rana, Surjit Singh Slathia, Sajjad Ahmed Kitchloo and Javed Rana, Congress leader and former Minister Raman Bhalla, Nationalist Panthers Party (NPP) leader Harshdev Singh, also a former Minister and some other political leaders, who were under house arrest since August 5 were released.
All the political leaders detained in Jammu region were informed through concerned police stations that they were free to carry out their political activities now, Police officials, however, downplayed the end of house arrests of the politicians saying they were already free to visit ew Delhi, shrines, temples, hospitals, attending functions and carrying out other regular works.

The state's Chief Electoral Officer had recently announced the schedule for the first-ever BDC elections. Voting and counting will be held on the same day on October 24.Around 26,000 panchayat members are eligible to vote.
On Tuesday, Jamaat-e-Islaami Hind (JIH) sought the release of all political detainees to participate in the upcoming BDC elections. Jamaat head Syed Sadatullah Hussaini said, "Any democratic process is good and panchayat elections are core to this. But for the sake of free and fair elections, all the political detainees should be set free, so that they can also participate in this process."
In this election, elected Sarpanches and Panches will elect chairpersons for the councils which form part of second tier of Panchayati Raj system. Union Minister of State in the PMO Dr Jitendra Singh had recently said the BJP was prepared to participate in these elections.
