In an industry where producers are unethically lifting film plots to give a new lease of life to daily soaps, this news comes as a breath of fresh air. The rights of Seeta Aur Geeta — featuring Hema Malini in the unforgettable double role — have been bought by a producer for making a series on the small screen.

Its huge commercial success prompted Bohra Bros (NDTV Imagine) to buy its rights to remake it for the small screen. When contacted, Sunil Bohra, producer of the show confirms the news. “We have bought the rights from the film-makers. When we wanted to make the show, we wanted to be honest and give credit to the makers of the movie. We know plagiarism is rampant in the industry, but we wanted to be different. So when we approached the channel after buying the rights, they were more than happy to
collaborate with us.”

When asked why Seeta Aur Geeta and not any other successful movie and he quickly replies, “This is one of the biggest blockbusters of Hema Malini’s career. With its wacky plot, it has an enduring appeal for all ages, an appeal that spans decades. The idea of turning it into a daily soap is exciting and we cannot wait to begin shooting for it.”

The hunt for the lead girl has just begun. “Hemaji portrayed the role brilliantly, so we need an actress who would be able to do proper justice to the two characters. The auditions are going on and we will decide on the final choice soon. She may be an
established actor or we may sign on a new name,” he says.
