The NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is among the toughest competitive entrance examinations conducted in India and is the primary entrance examination for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate medical and dental courses (MBBS and BDS) in various government and private medical colleges across the country.

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate or NEET UG 2023 results were announced in June and like every time, this year brought forth stories of grit and determination of candidates who cleared the test in the face of adversity.

One of the successful candidates was Umer Ahmad Ganie, a 19-year-old youth from the tiny village of Zagigam in Kashmir's Pulwama district, who worked as a painter to support his family. He aced the medical entrance exam NEET-UG by securing 601 marks out of 700. Umer's father worked as a labourer, while his mother took care of the family's needs.

Daily wager Umer worked as a painter. He used to study from 4 pm to 12 pm and again from 3 am to 8 am every day. During the day, he went to school and also worked.

“I come from a family which is not financially strong. I had to work as a daily wage labourer all while attending school. My father was over the age of 50 when I was in Class 9, therefore I had to work hard to make sure that my family was financially supported. It was in Class 10 when I heard the news of a boy clearing NEET and becoming a doctor from my district. That motivated me to prepare for the entrance test and I chose the Science stream in Class 11,” he told indianexpress.com.

When Umer was in Class 10, he was inspired to take the NEET exam after learning that a boy from the Pulwama district had passed the entrance exam and become a doctor. "His story inspired me to study for the NEET, and I decided to choose the Science stream in Class 11," Umer said.

Umer resorted to self-studying, used NCERT books and painted houses to collect money to buy important study materials and to support his family as well.

When asked for advice for aspirants who come from financially underprivileged backgrounds, Umer said students need not worry about lack of resources and should focus on working hard. "Even if you do not have money, a lot of study material is available online. I want to tell everyone to work hard," he added.

When asked about his future plans after receiving his MBBS, Umer said he only wants to practise in his native Kashmir.
