Former England cricketer Andrew Flintoff marked his long-awaited return to the field at Sophia Gardens on Friday, reuniting with the England squad for their highly anticipated one-day international series against New Zealand. The 45-year-old sportsman had been sidelined for nine months following a distressing incident during the filming of Top Gear at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey last year, which resulted in severe facial injuries and subsequent hospitalization, as reported by Sky Sports.

In their inaugural ODI match of the series against New Zealand, England faced a formidable challenge. Regrettably, despite their valiant efforts, they succumbed to defeat, with their opponents clinching victory by a margin of eight wickets.

Andrew Flintoff, a seasoned cricketer with an impressive record of 79 Test matches and 141 one-day matches for England, recently joined the national team. Captured in a photograph, he was seen seated among the support staff in the stands.

England captain Jos Buttler was delighted that Flintoff joined the squad.

After the match, Buttler said as quoted by Sky Sports, "So he's been starting to do some stuff in cricket. It's just great for him to be around, he's obviously an England legend and it's just nice to have him around the group."

However, Buttler clarified that Flintoff has not been assigned a specific role; rather, he was present solely for observation purposes.

"He's not been brought in with any specific role, just to be around and observe. A few of the lads can pick his brains a little bit and he's settled in really well. It's great to have him with us. Just for this series," Buttler said.

In the match, New Zealand made the decision to bowl first. England had a strong beginning with an 80-run partnership between Harry Brook (25 runs in 41 balls, including two fours) and Dawid Malan (54 runs in 53 balls, including nine fours). However, England's performance took a downturn as they reached a score of 101/3.

But then, Jos Buttler (72 runs) and the returning Ben Stokes (52 runs in 69 balls, with three fours and a six) stepped up with an impressive 88-run stand. This was followed by a 77-run partnership between Buttler and Liam Livingstone (52 runs in 40 balls, with three fours and three sixes), which helped England reach a total of 291/6 in 50 overs.

Rachin Ravindra (3/48) and Tim Southee (2/71) were the standout bowlers for New Zealand.

In the pursuit of 292 runs, openers Devon Conway and Will Young (29 runs) provided a solid start for New Zealand, forming a 61-run partnership. This was followed by a 56-run partnership between Conway and Henry Nicholls (26 runs in 30 balls, including three fours).

After England managed to reduce New Zealand to a score of 117/2, Conway (111* runs in 121 balls, including 13 fours and a six) and Daryl Mitchell (118* runs in 91 balls, including seven fours and seven sixes) unleashed their hitting prowess, completely dismantling the English bowling attack. Their incredible performance resulted in a match-winning 180-run partnership.
