A flop film every now or then is inevitable. Most actors have phases when they find their films not working at the box office. Even the biggest of superstars like Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan have seen bad phases. But there have been very few who haven’t let failure affect their stardom. Once such person is this star from the 80s who gave not 10 or 20 but a total of 180 flop films in his career. And yet, he remains a big name.

The Bollywood star with most flop films is...

Mithun Chakraborty has the dubious distinction of starring in the highest number of flop films in his career in Hindi cinema. The popular actor has 180 flop films in his career as a lead actor. The number is extremely high because of how prolific Mithun was during the 80s and 90s, often starring in over a dozen films each year. This means he has appeared in over 270 films in his career, of which 180 are flops. He leads the next actor in the list (Jeetendra with 101 flops) by a huge margin. During the late 90s, there was a phase when Mithun starred in 33 consecutive flop films.

How Mithun Chakraborty maintained his stardom despite flops

But the flop films did not affect Mithun’s star status. And that is because he has managed to deliver a lot of hits as well. The actor has starred in 50 hits as well, which includes 3 blockbusters and 9 superhits, an enviable record for any actor. Apart from these 50 hits, seven of his other films were above average grossers as well. In fact, most of Mithun’s flops were low budget films that were able to almost recover their losses. The actor appeared in very few big losses and disasters, which managed to keep his career afloat.

Mithun’s career experiments

It also helped that Mithun starred in seminal hits like Disco Dancer and appeared in supporting roles in other stars’ big hits like Agneepath. That kept him relevant for decades. As he grew older, the actor began appearing in supporting roles, lessening his responsibility of hits and flops.
