The journey of a film and its commercial performance is a team effort, beginning with a strong subject and an able crew collaborating to achieve the best result. Love Sonia is one such example. Director Tabrez Noorani, who dedicated more than a decade for the research and development of the subject, got a strong team to collaborate with him. The film tells the hard-hitting story of a young Indian village girl, played by Mrunal Thakur, whose life is irrevocably changed when she gets entrapped in the global flesh trade while trying to save her sister, played by Riya Sisodiya.
Tabrez’s relationship with Oscar winners AR Rahman and Resul Pookutty while making Slumdog Millionaire and internationally-acclaimed producers Deepak Nayar (Bend It Like Beckham, Sense8) and David Womark (Life Of Pi) helped give the film an international appeal. His producing partner Pravesh Sahni brought an incredible production team to the table, and his line producer, Rakesh Singh, brought in his expertise while shooting the film across India.
Co-producer Amar Butala worked with Tabrez on the script and on getting the solid ensemble cast, which includes Manoj Bajpayee, Richa Chadha, Rajkummar Rao, Sai Tamhankar, Adil Hussain, Anupam Kher, Demi Moore, Mark Duplass and Freida Pinto, besides Mrunal and Riya. He says, “Tabrez has been a close friend for over 15 years and we worked together on several films, but Love Sonia has always been his passion project. The film is a shocking take on the business of human trafficking. It promises to numb you, but its victory is that it makes you think.”
The crew of the film also includes DOP Lucas Bielan (Transformers, Deadpool 2), production designer Ravi Srivastava (Lion, Eat Pray Love) and writer Ritesh Shah (Pink, Kahaani), who has penned the dialogues.
Shalini Thackeray, who is the executive producer along with Deepak and Parvesh, came on board to take it to audiences across India. She says, “I remember, Tabrez spoke to me about his vision. I was amazed to see his research work of all these years, and knew that I want to be a part of this film.”
Pleased with the acclaim the movie has garnered on the international festival circuit and the excitement around its release in India, Tabrez says, “Everything came together like a dream, a few weeks before we shot. I was lucky to get all my key crew, whom I have been working with for years on this film. It was like shooting a film and having family around you.”
