A woman lodged a complaint against her NRI husband, Vishal Parekh, 26, and in-laws at the Gujarat University police station on Thursday night for demanding Rs50 lakh as dowry.

In her complaint, the 24-year-old woman, a resident of Navrangpura, alleged that she was tortured and beaten up by her in-laws, Jignesh Parekh and Bhavna Parekh, after she refused to give in to her husband’s dowry demands.

Investigation revealed that the woman hails from a humble background. Her father runs a salon and lives near Ishwar Bhuvan in Navrangpura. The woman married Vishal in January 2011, who settled in London after doing engineering. Although coming from a middle-class background, her father had spent over Rs15 lakh during the wedding to make sure that his daughter led a happy married life.

A month after the wedding, Vishal returned to London and applied for his wife’s visa. After six months, she went to London with her mother-in-law, Bhavna. Later, her father-in-law, Jignesh, also joined them.

According to the woman, after going to London, Vishal and her parents started mounting pressure on her to bring Rs50 lakh so that Vishal could start his own business and settle either in India or London.

“They told the woman that her father did not give anything as kariyavar (marriage gift).

Therefore, it is okay to give Rs50 lakh now,” said J R Bhachkan, sub-inspector of Gujarat University PS. The situation deteriorated after the family returned to Ahmedabad. The woman was again allegedly tortured by his family members at Vishal’s residence in Chandlodia.

The woman mentioned in her complaint that Vishal’s family members began to abuse her verbally after her father expressed his inability to pay the amount. She also claimed that her in-laws would even beat her up at times for not giving the money. Finally, seeing no hope of a rapprochement after her in-laws allegedly started torturing her daily, the woman lodged a complaint.

“She lodged a complaint against her husband and six of his family members, including Jignesh Parekh’s brother and three of his family members. We have lodged a case of dowry harassment,” said Bhachkan.
