India's tennis star Sania Mirza suffered a calf strain and was forced to retire from the women's doubles first-round match in the Australian Open on Thursday (January 23).
Sania and her partner, Nadiia Kichenok from Ukraine, were trailing 2-6, 0-1 against the Chinese duo of Xinyun Han and Lin Zhu during which Sania picked up an unfortunate calf injury and decided not to take further part in the game.
Previously, during the Hobart International, Sania made her winning return to the sport with Kichenok when the pair outclassed China's Zhang Shuai and Peng Shuai 6-4, 6-4 in the finals.
This was Sania's first major tournament since giving birth to her son Izhaan.
The 33-year-old was in top form and bagged her 42nd WTA doubles title, playing her first match since the China Open back in October 2017.
